The basic idea behind these guys philosophy is that the consumer market we have set up today doesn’t work. The market is set up so the American citizen buys and buys and buys, supporting the corporations, factories, and government.
This market has produced the idea of Planned Obsolesce, meaning products are “designed for the dump” because if there was a product that lasted forever, and never was outdated, the company that made it would go out of business correct?
So that means that corporations aren’t looking to give you the best product possible… they want to sell you a product that satisfies you enough, that when it breaks or gets outdated, you’ll come back for more. As Chris Rock puts it, (paraphrased) how come if they can make a space shuttle that can make it out of the atmosphere without blowing up, they cant make a Cadillac with bumpers that stay on?
Its a funny joke, but he’s got a point.
Check out the website.. Theres a video that illusrtrates this stuff better than i could. you dont have to agree with everything she says, but at least think about it. Its interesting.
